If you are like me, between work, housekeeping, and just keeping the kids alive daily, you don’t get much time for yourself. You either have to be an early riser and get your alone time while the kids are still in bed or stay up late after the kids go to bed to get that much-needed quiet time. I am by no means an early riser and never have been. So after I get the kids to bed, the hard questions I have to ask myself are am I motivated to get more adult time in, do I stay up and watch TV, or do I say screw it and go to bed as well?

Suppose my answer to myself is TV. By the way, it is okay to talk to and answer yourself because who else will give you the most intelligent answer if not you? Anyway, I digress if your answer is watching TV; here are some shows and movies that I watch after the kids are in bed either because of their content or because I don’t want to try to watch with the kid’s constant noise. So I relentlessly let my kids control the TV for most of the day, and I read. I’ve shared my recommendations for taking a “time-out” and relaxing as a mom, but let’s get back to me claiming control over the TV remote.

Here are the shows and movies I have been binging and enjoying.

1. Modern Family

“Told from the perspective of an unseen documentary filmmaker, the series offers an honest, often-hilarious perspective of family life. Parents Phil and Claire yearn for an honest, open relationship with their three kids. But a daughter who is trying to grow up too fast, another who is too smart for her own good, and a rambunctious young son make it challenging. Claire’s dad, Jay, and his Latina wife, Gloria, are raising two sons together, but people sometimes believe Jay to be Gloria’s father. Jay’s gay son, Mitchell, and his partner, Cameron, have adopted a little Asian girl, completing one big — straight, gay, multicultural, traditional — happy family.”

I watched this show with my daughter in the room, and it opened up a conversation with her even though she is only 5; she got to see how families are different. The show would allow her to ask questions like why Lily has two dads and no mom. My husband and I explained to her how families are different; some have two dads like Lily, some have two moms, there are some with a mom and a dad like her, and some only have a mom or dad, and all these families are acceptable because no family is the same.

Now I have recently started to watch the show without her within viewing and earshot, not because of her questions which, by the way, I loved because I want to raise her to be an accepting, compassionate human being free of judgment towards others as much as I can as a parent.

The reason to stop watching it with her in the vicinity was that as the kids on the show got older, the content became more mature. Also, words like dammit and hell are used quite a bit. Yes, more colorful words are used worldwide, but it is shocking to hear your daughter use the word dammit in perfect content instead of darn it.

I enjoy this show because the comedy is spot on, whether you’re Phil and Claire, Cameron and Mitchel, or Gloria and Jay. You can relate to their struggles to keep the marriage strong and the kids alive as daily situations arise. You can’t help but laugh because, most likely, you and your family have dealt with something similar, and it is easier to laugh at these characters than at yourself.

2. Longmire

“Based on the Walt Longmire mystery novels by best-selling author Craig Johnson, this contemporary crime drama stars Australian actor Robert Taylor in the title role, the charismatic and dedicated sheriff of Absaroka County, Wyo. Longmire patrols the county with a brave face and sense of humor, but deep inside he hides the pain of his wife’s recent death. With the urging of his daughter, Cady, and the help of Vic, a new female deputy, Longmire gains a new appreciation of his job and decides to run for re-election. He’s committed to putting his life back together, one piece at a time, and he often calls on best friend and confidant Henry Standing Bear for support.”

I love this show. I will rarely say a movie or TV series is better than a book, but in this case, it was, at least for me. The storylines and acting were all fantastic, and the ending was perfect; it gave you closure, but at the same time, if they wanted to bring this show back, they could with fresh and new storylines.

This is definitely not a show for the kids to be exposed to. Nudity and coarse language are used.

“It’s the late 1950s and Miriam “Midge” Maisel has everything she has ever wanted — the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant apartment on New York’s Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent she didn’t previously know she had — stand-up comedy. This revelation changes her life forever as she begins a journey that takes her from her comfortable life on the Upper West Side through the cafes and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she makes her way through the city’s comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the “Tonight Show” couch. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (“Gilmore Girls”).”

I love this show and look forward to watching the fifth and final season, which has been yet given a release date but has been confirmed by the network that it is coming. By far, I laugh so much during this show. Between Midge’s manager, Susi, played by Alex Borstein, and Midge’s parents Abe played by Tony Shalhoub, and Rose Weissman, played by Marin Hinkle, the show is never-ending laughs. They almost steal the show as Midge navigates her single life as a single mother while navigating her new career as a Comedian.

4. Schit’s Creek

“In the sitcom “Schitt’s Creek,” a wealthy couple — video store magnate Johnny and his soap opera star wife Moira — suddenly find themselves completely broke. With only one remaining asset, a small town called Schitt’s Creek, which the Roses bought years earlier as a joke, this once-wealthy couple must give up life as they know it. With their two spoiled children in tow and their pampered lives behind them, the Rose family is forced to face their newfound poverty head-on and come together as a family to survive.”

This show is a definite for after the kids are in bed and have the TV all to yourself series. I laughed so hard during this show that I would have to rewind the scene to hear what I missed with my laughing, only to start laughing all over again to their constantly comic dialog cleverly written throughout the show. I love the whole family of characters, but My favorite is David, and within the first episode, you will be attached to this quirky family and have a favorite as well.

5. Life in Pieces

“The series chronicles the lives of three generations of the Short family as they go about their daily lives in Los Angeles County. Each episode is told as four short stories, typically one for three of the four Short family branches and one that involves the fourth and ties the other three stories together.”

This show had me hooked from the first episode. The series only lasted for four seasons, but because the network knew it wasn’t going to be renewed for a fifth season, the writers were able to conclude the series by giving the fans closure, unlike so many shows that end with cliffhangers and unanswered questions that so many network shows do these days with their abrupt cancelations from their networks for various reasons.
