Being a Stay At Home Mom (SAHM) can be wonderful. Free from the stress of working outside the home, you can focus on your children and not miss out on all those fantastic little daily moments of watching your little ones grow. You get to experience the satisfaction and peace of mind that comes with being in control of how your children are raised and taught.

However, being a SAHM (or just a mom in general) is not without its challenges. The house is a mess, there’s a never-ending mountain of laundry, you have to manage family schedules, you can’t find anything, and you can’t beat that nagging feeling you’ve forgotten something.

All the while making sure you’re spending enough quality time with your kids while trying to get literally anything done. At any given time, there’s a lot of tasks to juggle.

A SAHM is a “nurse, chauffeur, chef, teacher, playmate, housekeeper, laundry attendant, accountant, and babysitter all rolled into one.”

Verywell Family

SAHM’s are also usually responsible for a whole other host of things like:

  • volunteering at our kids’ school
  • managing family extracurricular & recreational activities
  • organizing and coordinating family schedules
  • and family event planning

Unfortunately, stay at home mom’s don’t receive a salary for all we do.  A 2019 survey quoted bySalary.com found:

the “estimated the value of a mother’s work by tracking real-time market prices of all the jobs that moms perform. The result? The median annual salary for stay-at-home moms in 2019 is $178,201.”

Pretty impressive, huh? Even though it’s unpaid, the work you do is invaluable. But the truth is, you don’t have to be a superhero to get it all done.

Conquer Daily Family Routines & Create a Family Schedule that Prevails!

What can a routine do for you? Having a structured system in place creates balance and household efficiency. It’s beneficial to the whole family, especially kids. Planning your time is an essential first step. If you don’t know how much time you have in a day, you can’t prioritize tasks, and you likely aren’t getting as much done as you want to. Get the full scoop on effective time management tips for mommas.

Family Daily Routines

Having a daily routine means you can organize, plan, and prioritize your day in advance. It gives your day structure, ensures you get everything done, and meets everyone’s needs.

Having a routine helps beat SAHM boredom because you always know what’s next on the schedule. They give children a sense of security, create stability, get them used to agendas, encourage independence, and promote life-long healthy habits.

Routines are a win-win for the entire family, and you’ll feel like a supermom because you implemented a system that creates balance and harmony in your home life!

Let’s start with your regular daily routines. Jot down wake-up times, meal & snack times, naps, school time, bathtimes, and bedtimes. Then fill in the gaps. Below are some morning ritual ideas to start the day off right!

Morning Rituals to Start the Day off Right!

  • Make your bed immediately
  • Open the curtains
  • Get dressed, brush hair
  • Have a cup (or two) of coffee
  • Fill up your water bottle
  • Start a morning gratitude circle with the kids

It also helps to set consistent wake-up and bedtimes.

Mom’s Daily Routine Chores Checklist

This list has small daily household tasks essential to keeping the house clean and functional all week long. To make this super achievable I’ve separated my day into morning and evening checklists.

Morning Checklist:

  • make beds
  • start laundry
  • unpack the dishwasher
  • water houseplants

Evening Checklist

  • Cleaning the kitchen and dining room after dinner
  • Washing dishes
  • Picking up toys after my toddler
  • Sweeping
  •  Laying out clothes for tomorrow

Instead of chores piling up on me throughout the week, daily maintenance tasks save me hours I would otherwise spend catching up on the weekend. Now, my weekends are free to focus on quality time with my family. It’s been transformational!

As a mom you’re so busy with childcare, cleaning the house, and cooking meals. You probably have to schedule your tasks around everyone else’s needs.

Additional Daily Routines:

  • Mom’s chore time
  • Assigned family laundry days
  • Me time (usually during naps or after the kids are in bed)

Don’t forget to delegate chores often! My kids have their own daily chores checklists to reduce my workload and stress levels. Here’s how I managed to Trick my Kids Into Doing Their Chores–and asking for more! You can do it too with The Complete Chore Reward System for Kids–Free PDF! It includes everything you need to inspire and motivate your kids, teach them valuable life skills, and actually be excited about helping out–drama-free.

Once you’ve created your daily routines, it’s easy to generate a comprehensive weekly family schedule. Print it out and post it on your fridge where everyone can see it. As a result, there’s no confusion about when anyone is busy, free, or what time dinner is.

Weekly Family Schedule

Certain tasks only need to be completed weekly, like cleaning bathrooms, washing bedding, or grocery shopping. Plan and organize your family’s entire weekly schedule.

Add these to your weekly schedule:

Assigned Laundry Days for Each Family Member

To save time on the never-ending mountain of laundry, I highly recommend using an assigned family laundry schedule. Each family member has an assigned laundry day so you only have to do one load each day. my school-age child does her own laundry. She’s old enough, and let’s face it, momma needs all the help she can get!

Alternatively, you could do all the laundry in one day (or two). I used to waste most of my weekends tackling a mountain of laundry for a family of four. Now, with the added help, I only have one smaller, more manageable load three days of the week.

That’s four days I get a break from washing, drying, folding, and putting away clothes.

Each family member knows when their designated day is, and they know if they need something washed, they had better put it in their hamper on time! Momma doesn’t wash floor clothes!

This practice is natural consequences parenting, and it works like a charm! We each have separate laundry hampers, so there’s no sorting necessary; that’s more time savings!

Cleaning Days

I usually clean on Mondays because the house is a mess after the weekend. Rather than cleaning up on Sundays and missing out on family time, I do it when the kids are at school and my partner is working. There are fewer distractions which result in more time to focus on the task at hand. Your family schedule may look different; choose whatever day works best for you!

Since low-maintenance tasks are included in my daily routine; the weekend is when I schedule more time-consuming chores. It’s a better time for the things I’ve been putting off, like cleaning the bathroom, organizing a closet, or deep cleaning a room. Makes sense, right?

If you’re interested in delegating chores to other family members, a family chore schedule is a super useful tool! Post this printable family chore schedule and assign tasks to each family member for every day of the week.

Weekly Family Meal Planning

As you’ve seen, executing a coherent plan is fantastic for streamlining your family’s routines, schedules, and expectations. You remember what to do and when you can do it. You’ve saved yourself a whole lot of time and stress by regaining control of your daily household operations.

Adding weekly meal planning into the mix will save you invaluable time, effort, and even money. Learn why busy moms everywhere are obsessed with weekly meal planning conquer your weekly menu like a mom boss!

Life Admin Days

Life admin days are an excellent time to catch up on emails, schedule appointments, and make phone calls. I usually do this on Tuesdays. If you’re responsible for family budgeting and paying bills, doing it once a week is a foolproof way to make sure you don’t miss anything.

The Ever Elusive “Me Time”

Believe me, when I say this, you must prioritize this, or it will never happen. Schedule at least 30 minutes a day for yourself. You have to practice self-care to be an effective caregiver. It’s the equivalent of putting on your oxygen mask first. I fit this into my daily routine when my Toddler naps and when the kids are in bed at night.

Me time is included on our weekly family schedule that’s posted on the refrigerator. I use this as my creative outlet and blogging time. I’ve successfully scheduled extra “me time” on weekends for maximum productivity. My partner has his “me time” scheduled too. It’s a win-win for both of us!

You could use it to fit in whatever activities you love to do, like scrapbooking, meditation, yoga, or even binge watching Netflix with a glass of wine!

Ideas for quality “Me Time”:

  • relaxing bubble bath
  • working on your side hustle
  • reading
  • scrapbooking
  • meditation
  • yoga
  • binge watching Netflix

If you’re attached, remember to schedule date nights to focus on quality time with your spouse or partner exclusively (even if it’s at home).

Monthly Family Calendar

Are you feeling really good about your daily and weekly routines & schedules? Want to add more organization to your family’s life? Use a monthly family calendar and add essential family appointments and meetings, exciting community events, and fun monthly family activities like game nights or movie nights.
